Demetri Martin, Louis C.K. coming to the Straz Center in Tampa

All of a sudden, the Straz Center has a monopoly on basic cable comics coming to Tampa.

First, Daniel Tosh of Comedy Central's Tosh 2.0 is performing there on Oct. 17. ThenChelsea Handler of E!'s Chelsea Lately will be there on Oct. 23.

Today, we find out Demetri Martin is coming to the Straz on Aug. 21, and Louis C.K.will be there on Dec. 9.

Martin, the host of Comedy Central's Important Things with Demetri Martin, will perform at the Straz Center in Tampa on Aug. 21. Tickets are $35. For details, click here.

Martin's shows are a strange form of lo-fi multimedia, involving music, sketches, offbeat one-liners and visual jokes. He is ambidextrous, artistic, odd and very popular among people who are into intelligent, unusual comedy. The last time Demetri was in Tampa (also at TBPAC, in 2006), we had the chance to talk to him about The Daily Show,Conan O'Brien, Gary Larson and the term "hipster."

As for Louis C.K., our colleague Eric Deggans just spoke to him the other day to preview his new sitcom Louie, which premieres tonight on FX. He's a comic's comic in every sense of the word; his style of working out edgy, dark, personal material while he's onstage has made him a favorite of pretty much every professional comic working today. If he's not the best stand-up in the game, he's certainly in the discussion.

Ticket's to Louis C.K.'s Dec. 9 show in Tampa start at $25.

Lost in all this news is the fact that Kevin Nealon is apparently coming to the Tampa Improv on Sept. 10-11. We guess because he stars on a premium cable show (Showtime's Weeds), the Straz wasn't interested.
