hip hop drop 6-3-2010

They changed the vibe cover.... here is the new one
"Nicky Minaj Covers VIBE"
Nicki Minaj speaks on her early influence of sex-based raps and aim to tone down her style in the new VIBE magazine.

Based off excerpts from her cover feature, Nicki explains why she may limit her rap antics in order to be taken more seriously.
"When I grew up I saw females doing certain things, and I thought I had to do that exactly...The female rappers of my day spoke about sex a lot . . . and I thought that to have the success they got, I would have to represent the same thing. When in fact I didn't have to represent the same thing...I'm not abandoning the funny voices. I just did a crazy tribute to ODB's 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya'...But it's coming up more with the album. I had a teacher in elementary who would stand on her table and whisper. We'd all turn around like, 'What is this lunatic doing?' But she would achieve what she wanted. She wanted us to stop talking and listen. I feel like I need to mellow it down so people can hear what I have to say." (VIBE)
Last April, Nicki announced plans to drop her untitled debut album this fall.
"Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown recording artist Nicki Minaj will release her highly anticipated solo debut album in Fall 2010. 'I don't want to do anything that sounds like what any other female rapper has done,' said Nicki Minaj. 'I want to start a new lane that one day, 10 years from now, girls will say, 'I'm more of a Nicki Minaj type.'" (Cash Money Records Press Release)
The rapper recently talked about her position as a female in the rap game.
"You know what, I'm a female entertainer," Nicki clarified, "but I don't let it offend me when people call me a female MC or female rapper, because I just look at it as a challenge. I'm about to climb over every single barrier and just put females on a different map altogether," she continued. "So I take it as it comes. Like, I don't think in five years people will consider me a female rapper--I'll be, like, an entertainer. But, as of right now, I get it. I started off in the underground hip-hop circuit, so I'm a female rapper right now. But it's just the beginning." (XXL Magazine)
Earlier this year, Minaj justified not rushing out her first solo effort.
"I've gotten great feedback from artists I look up to and never thought I'd work with," she explained in an interview. "They're already in line to be on the project. But it's like, 'Do I want to put out a debut album with a thousand features on it or do I wanna finally showcase Nicki?' I'm not worried about features at all...With the album, I think it's more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again. Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see. People don't even know what a female rapper does. We're so not used to seeing it. It's nonexistent in categories. We don't get nominated. I need to work [the people] up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that -- then the album will come. Honestly, I'd love to put an album out this year, but I don't believe in rushing things either." (MTV)

The showdown between former drug kingpin Freeway Ricky Ross and Carol City, Florida rapper Rick Ross (William Leonard Roberts II) will commence prior to the release of Teflon Don.

Representatives for Freeway Ricky Ross will seek an injunction seeking to block the release of rapper Rick Ross’ highly anticipated studio album, Teflon Don.

"If William Roberts attempts to use the ‘Rick Ross’ name that he spent years earning and spending time in prison to uphold, he will be met with an injunction," a representative for Freeway Rick Ross told AllHipHop.com. "Simple as that. This is not a publicity stunt, a game or a hoax, to sell some Rick Ross albums, as some have suggested. In fact, [Freeway] Rick Ross intends to halt the release of any Summer 2010 ‘Rick Ross’ album."

Freeway Ricky claims rapper Rick Ross stole his name, image and likeness and parlayed it into a successful rap career, making millions of dollars, without permission.

Freeway Ricky Ross is a well known, former drug dealer from Los Angeles. During 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Ross made millions of dollars per day, by dealing drugs throughout California, Ohio, Maryland, Indiana and other states.

Ross’ case is of note, due to a series of articles published by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Gary Webb, who uncovered the CIA’s connection to Ross and drug dealing in Los Angeles in the San Jose Mercury News, in 1996.

The articles were the beginning of the notorious Iran-Contra scandal, which also linked Danilo Blandon, Ross’ cocaine connection, the CIA, which allowed sold arms to Iran and allowed the cocaine into black communities, to fund a war in El Salvador.

That same year, Freeway Ricky Ross was sentenced to life in prison, for attempting to purchase 100 kilos of cocaine from an undercover agent.

Freeway Ricky Ross’ life sentence was eventually reduced to 20 years, and that was further cut down because Ross was a model prisoner.

He was released from a Texarkana, Texas state prison in May of 2009. Freeway Ricky maintains that rapper Rick Ross has become famous at his expense.

Representatives for Freeway Rick Ross maintain that the Rapper Rick Ross applied trade to register and trademark the name Rick Ross, but were refused by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In addition to rapper Rick Ross, Slip-N-Slide, Jay-Z, Antonio Reid, Island Def Jam will be named in the lawsuit, unless the parties can reach a settlement.

“Jay-Z had no reason to disrespect Rick Ross and violate his name, because Jay-Z was a hustler, just like Rick Ross and [he] should’ve respected what ‘the boss’ did in the ‘game.’ L.A. Reid knew he should’ve cleared the name before letting Roberts’ art imitate [Freeway] Rick Ross’ life and exploiting his name.”

Sources close to the matter told AllHipHop.com that Freeway Ricky Ross will seek “half” of everything rapper Rick Ross has ever earned.

With verification that pop starlets Rihanna and Pink will be appearing on his new album, Eminem has addressed the LP’s direction following his dark themes on last year’sRelapse.

In an interview overseas with Paris’ Skyrock FM, the Detroit emcee explained that the idea to include each singer came to him after finishing his vocals.

“When I did the song that I did with Pink I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record,” Eminem revealed. “I felt like she would smash this record, so I gave her a call and she was with it, so we did it. The other that I did with Rihanna is one of those tracks that I felt only she could pull it off.”

Throughout his career, Eminem has parodied many pop artists, including Michael Jackson, Madonna (“Just Lose It”), Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera (“The Real Slim Shady”), and Mariah Carey (“Superman,” “Jimmy Crack Corn,” “Bagpipes from Baghdad,” and “The Warning”).

His last high-profile collaboration with a pop singer was with Dido for “Stan,” the critically-acclaimed third single off 2000’s multi-platinum Marshall Mathers LP.

Regarding the direction of the new Recovery tracks, Eminem remained tight-lipped but assured fans they will make artistic sense once heard.

“Both of the records, I guess you just got to hear them to know what they are,” he said.

The only rapper featured on the album is Lil Wayne, who last collaborated with Eminem on his own “Drop the World” and Drake’s “Forever” single.

Eminem praised Wayne’s recent work, and acknowledged him as one of Hip-Hop’s elite emcees.

“I’ve always respected what Wayne does,” Eminem stated. “Wayne to me is one of the greatest in the game right now.”

Eminem’s Recovery will be released on June 22.

G Unit to Def Jam?

What? Yeah. First of all, I am hearing that Lloyd Banks has definitely signed to Def JamRecords. Word. So, that’s that, but the crazy thing is I’m hearing that the rest of G-Unit is coming over as well. Now, that is crazy since Rick Ross is the cornerstone of Hip-Hop over there. I know that sounds crazy, but The Roots, Redman and others aren’t getting the burn they once did. Humph! Anyway, I don’t know how 50 Cent can co-exist in the same building as Rawse. But some of the goons that are down with 50 are rumored to be ready for the ruckus. Sheeeesh! How can this be real?
